Self—absorption coefficients of C 1 4 radiation, determined for six species of freshwater ostracods, varied with differences in size, sex, instar, reproductive state, and among species. Self—absorption is generally higher in ostracods than are comparable values for other microcrustacea and some aquatic insects, obligochaetes, and fish larvae. Where C 1 4 is employed as a tracer in precise investigations on feeding and metabolism, variations in self—absorption of radiation must be considered in detail.
