Rates of water loss were measured in Varanus gouldii inhabiting two areas of different aridity. In the subhumid area a distinct seasonal cycle in water loss was evident, the rates being highest in summer and lowest in winter. Water losses in the semiarid area in summer were highly variable and were closely correlated with the variable activity of the goannas. Animals in the semiarid environment are able to reduce water output by remaining in burrows for extended periods. The water turnover rates of V. gouldii are much lower than those reported so far for other vertebrates. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of physiological and behavioral mechanisms of water conservation in terrestrial reptiles.
