It has been suggested that the ecological efficiencies (or gross efficiencies of yield to ingestion) of steady—state consumer populations may be a constant 8—12%. It is now argued that, on the basis of available data, the ecological efficiency of populations of homeothermic animals cannot exceed 2—3%.
