Twenty—six experiments were conducted in which phosphate uptake and oxygen consumption by Daphnia schodleri Sars from membrane—filtered lake water were measured concurrently at three densities (25/, 50/, 100/100 ml). Assuming linearity, uptake was related inversely to density (P < 0.05), directly to phosphate concentration (P < 0.005), and directly to oxygen consumption (P < 0.006).
