A number of kinds of sampling boards were used to test the effect of different microclimates on the state of aggregation of various prairie cryptozoa. White boards had significantly more Isotoma viridis (Collembola), Arion fasciatus (a slug) and a general category of mites than did black boards. The collembolan was more abundant under large than small boards just about in proportion to the differences in perimeters of the two boards. The collembolan also had a definite diurnal cycle. Actual microclimatic differences could not be demonstrated.
