Biomass of the aboveground portion of a 16—year—old Pinus virginiana stand was estimated for nine dates throughout the growing season using 45 sample trees. Total production for the season was estimated to be 14.3 metric tons per hectare of which 41%, 30%, 17%, 8%, and 4% were boles, fascicles, old branches, new twigs, and flowers, respectively. Attempts to estimate the pattern of within—season production were unsuccessful because of the difficulties involved in estimating within—season growth of boles and, more particularly, older branches.
