Evidence from surveyor's notes, news articles, and fire records indicates that a timberland brush field site in the California mountains is well suited to timber but has been occupied by brush for at least a hundred years. The high fire factor in the area favors brush at the expense of tree growth. With a combination of highly inflammable brush and frequent fire starts it seems unlikely that this brush field will remain free of fire for sufficient time to permit natural forest regeneration.
