In this review, I thoroughly analyze the structural changes that have characterized the banking industry since 1980. I (a) describe the most important structural changes in the banking industry, (b) discuss and assess the possible explanations of such changes based on the empirical literature, (c) examine recent empirical studies addressing the possible effects of the structural changes on the main financial market participants and on overall economic activity, and (d) provide suggestions for future research regarding the causes and effects of the changes in banking structure, based on the perceived gaps in the existing body of empirical knowledge. Whenever possible, I address issues related to agricultural credit.
