Summary Hilger , H. H. & Böhle, U.‐R.: Pontechium : a new genus distinct from Echium and Lobostemon ( Boraginaceae ). – Taxon 49: 737–746. 2000. – ISSN 0040‐0262. The phylogenetic relationships of Echium, Lobostemon , and Echiostachys ( Boraginaceae‐Lithospermeae ) were inferred from DNA sequence variation. The presence of a bicapitate rather than a bifid stigma and plastid trnL (UAA) , intron, trnL (UAA) ‐trnF (UAA) spacer and nuclear (ITS1) DNA sequence analyses confirm an isolated position for Echium maculatum L. and recommend exclusion from the genus Echium ( Boraginaceae ) as a new genus: Pontechium.
