Summary Graham, S. A.: The problematic typification of Cuphea (Lythraceae). – Taxon 50: 487–490. 2001. – ISSN 0040‐0262. As a consequence of recent disagreement on the choice of the type of Cuphea, a detailed account of the reasons for selecting C. decandra Ait. over C. viscosissima Jacq. is given. The original description of Cuphea P. Browne included inflorescence, floral, seed, and trichome characters and distribution information that apply most closely to C. decandra, which is defended as the correct type under Art. 10.2 of the Code. It is also confirmed that the illustration in the protologue of C. viscosissima, chosen by Molero & Zijlstra as lectotype of that name, supersedes the earlier designated neotype.
