Summary An examination of type material of Iridaea punicea Postels & Ruprecht revealed that the specimens belong in Turnerella mertensiana (Postels & Ruprecht) Schmitz. Type material of Iridophycus whidbeyanum Setchell & Gardner, currently considered a synonym of Iridaea punicea , appears to be conspecific with Iridaea sanguinea (Setchell & Gardner) Hollenberg & Abbott. In the northeast Pacific there appears to be only one red, foliose species of Iridaea, I. sanguinea , distributed from Kodiak Island, Alaska (Gulf of Alaska) to south‐central California (San Luis Obispo County).
