Summary The genus Carex includes species with true vegetative culms as well as species with vegetative shoots that lack elongate stems. Two terms relating to vegetative shoots in Carex are precisely defined. A brief review of the variation in vegetative shoot form is presented and examples of the utility of vegetative shoots in the taxonomy of Carex are given. Vegetative shoots should always be obtained by collectors of Carex , and they should be utilized in taxonomic work. Specific suggestions regarding collection and description are provided.
