Summary Sphaeria spina Schweinitz was cited by Berkeley as basionym for the new combination Sphaeronaema spina (‘ Sphaeronema spina’ ) Berk, and Ravenel. This and subsequent transfers to other genera of coelomycetes ought to recognize this basionym for which an extant neotype is designated. Sphaeronaema spiniforme (‘ Sphaeronema spinaeforme ’) Berk, and Curtis is available for the microconidial anamorph of undetermined relationship. Interpretation of Sphaeria spina as a pyrenomycete is based upon a misunderstanding of its true nature. ‘Sphaeronema’ (spherical thread), a meaningless and misleading perversion of the original Sphaeronaema Fr.: Fr. (referring to the globoid gelatinous flux of extruded conidia), cannot be followed, Art. 75.
