Summary A taxonomic and nomenclatural study of pondcypress and baldcypress in the southeastern United States revealed the misapplication of a name. When pondcypress is treated as a variety rather than as a separate species, it should be referred to Taxodium distichum var. imbricarium (Nutt.) Croom rather than the commonly used var. nutans (Ait.) Sweet. The latter is placed in synonymy with the typical variety.
