Summary Goniotrichum Kützing (1843) and Erythrotrichia Areschoug (1850), both being based on Conferva ceramicola Lyngbye (1819), must be regarded as nomenclatural synonyms. Since Erythrotrichia is a conserved name, Goniotrichum is automatically rejected. Diconia Harvey (1849), a taxonomic synonym of Goniotrichum , is rejected as invalid. Stylonema Reinsch (1875) becomes available to accommodate species formerly placed in Goniotrichum: S. cornu‐cervi Reinsch, S. alsidii (Zanard.) Drew, and S. subcoeruleum (Dangeard) Wynne, comb. nov.
