Summary A review is provided of the nature and support of the international structures responsible for botanical and zoological nomenclature. In the case of botany these are the Nomenclature Section of the International Botanical Congress, the Division of Botany of the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS), the Permanent Committee for Botanical Nomenclature, the Commission on the Nomenclature of Plants, and the International Association of Plant Taxonomy (IAPT). In the case of zoology there are the Division of Zoology of IUBS, the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, and the International Trust for Zoological Nomenclature. A comparison is made to draw out the essential differences between the structures.
