Summary The problem of nomenclature and taxonomy of the genera Triticum, Aegilops and × Triticosecale has been discussed. It is proposed that Aegilops be recognized as an independent genus and not merged with Triticum. Similarly, it is proposed that × Triticosecale be not treated as a nothogenus and instead treated as a monotypic genus having a new name with proper circumscription and type specimen. This new genus will include only established cultivars and the nothogenus × Triticosecale will continue to be used restrictively for newly produced hybrids and related breeding material which has not reached the stage of a registered cultivar.
