Summary Recent claims that Lycopersicon lycopersicum (L.) Farwell is the correct name for the tomato are discussed in relation to the International Rules of Botanical Nomenclature. It is concluded that the name Lycopersicon esculentum Miller is correct. A preliminary proposal is made in an attempt to clarify Article 23 regarding the definition of tautonyms.
