Summary The name of the holotype of the generic name Penicillium Fr. (1832), “Mucor crustaceus L.”, is considered to be a nomen dubium and to probably represent a member of a genus other than Penicillium as currently conceived. In order to preserve current usage of the name Penicillium , the conservation of Penicillium Link ex Gray (1821) with P. expansum Link ex Gray as the lectotype species is proposed.
