Summary Quercus prinus L. has been used for two different species of chestnut oaks in eastern North America for over 175 years and is now considered to be a constant source of error and confusion. It cannot be rejected easily under Art. 69 because the type cannot be identified. Several alternative solutions are suggested, the simplest and clearest being to use an unambiguous synonym.
