Summary This paper is an historical resume of names that have been used for the group of legumes whose members have papilionoid flowers. When this taxon is treated as a subfamily, the prefix “Papilion‐”, with various terminations, has predominated. We propose conservation of Papilionoideae as an alternative to Faboideae, coeval with the “unique” conservation of Papilionaceae at the family rank.
