Summary Transmission electron microscopy of the pollen of Parthenice mollis Gray reveals a helianthoid structural pattern. This pattern is characteristic of the subtribe Melampodinae, in which this species has been traditionally placed. Earlier reports of P. mollis pollen indicated an ultrastructural pattern which was characteristic of the Ambrosiinae (i.e., not typically helianthoid): herbarium material upon which this earlier work was based was incorrectly determined, the specimen concerned being Iva ambrosaefolia Gray.
