Summary It is contended that the proposed conservation of such lectotypes as that of Bombax ceiba L. for the genus Bombax is unnecessary. To insist that the type of a genus must conform completely with the generic protologue is an unreasonable requirement. The lectotype of the genus Jatropha L. (Euphorbiaceae) is discussed as another example of this proposed but ill‐advised requirement. It is argued that such proposals for conservation be rejected.
