Summary Mainly on the basis of the correspondence between Linnaeus and Osbeck in 1752, I point out that contrary to some recently published opinions, specimens brought by Osbeck, and not the figure of E. maderaspatana , are the types of O. chinensis; subsequently the species is typified. To avoid further confusion due to the rather poor differential characters of O. chinensis and zeylanica in most writings, a set of valuable differential characters is given.
