Summary A biographical sketch of the author of the first Flora van Utrecht (1843) is followed by some notes on Gevers Deynoot's botanical work in general (e.g. on the Flora batava ) and on his Flora in particular. The book illustrates the rich diversity of the vegetation around Utrecht in the middle of the nineteenth century, a wealth strongly contrasting with its poverty in the second half of the twentieth century resulting from a widespread degradation of the environment.
