Summary A ‘large’ family of flowering plants is here defined as a family for which a taxonomist would need ten or more years to complete a monographic treatment, or a revision for one of the major floras. The number of such families increases because of the increase in materials and secondary literature. The only possible way of completing monographs or revisions of such major groups seems to be by means of team‐work.
