Summary The pollen of all species of Clarkia (Onagraceae) has been investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy. Fifteen characters were scored and analysed by numerical taxonomic methods. The resulting dendrogram successfully separates several of the natural groups within Clarkia . The limitations of interpreting phylogenetic status of characters despite the availability of a well‐documented phylogeny of the species are discussed.
