The territory of the Republic of Srpska is characterized by spatial heterogeneity which is manifested by significant dispersion of the population. Based on detailed analysis, it was concluded that the largest percentage of the population of the Republic of Srpska is widespread in the zone up to 300 m above sea level. This area (about 30% of the republic territory) has 786,104 inhabitants, which represents 67% of the population. Hypsometric distribution of population indicates significant disparities between western and eastern parts of the Republic of Srpska. Due to lower altitude in the western part, most of the urban centres are located in the zones of lowland and rolling hills. In the eastern part of the Republic of Srpska, position and settlement networks are conditioned by relief configuration, so that the majority of the population is concentrated in small mountain villages.
