Due to their rapid development, multimedia and network technologies have become a part of our lives. Information technology increases the rationality of the education process, efficiency of learning and the significance of the educator's profession; it changes the directions of the future development of pedagogy and didactics, and the educational system as a whole. This paper describes why multimedia should be implemented in higher education institutions in Serbia in the field of biochemistry, and indicates the problems that students usually encounter in learning complex, highly abstract biochemical content. Examples of contemporary educational practice in leading countries are given, together with a survey of available digital educational content (digital courses, animations, simulations and virtual laboratories) in biochemistry for the areas that are the most difficult to study
