The paper presents ethnological studies of two rural settlements in Šumadija with the characteristics of agricultural, industrial and mining production. They are typical settlements with all significant elements of traditional Serbian culture, but are undergoing significant changes and modernization. The greatest part of the research was carried out from 1971 to 1975, with the additional researches in 1981 and 1982; the researches deal with the period of the first eight decades of the 20th century. The topics of the research are marriage, family and households, rural cooperatives, village as a socio-economical and ceremonial-religious community, elements of law related to rural life.
