The deterioration of solid insulating materials is due to a significant extent to partial discharges taking place in enclosed cavities. Based on two known models, the classical capacitance model and Pedersen's model, a comparison is being made between theoretical and experimental values of partial discharges which occur in enclosed cavities. The practical consequences of such a comparison are discussed.
