Researches into the duration of service period of cows of gray alpine race on the P.D. Gacko farm was conducted on 123 cows from the first to fifth lactation period. The researches were conducted for each lactation period separately and for all the five lactation periods together. The service period after the first lactation period lasted 97,4 days, ranging from 117 to 262 days. The average service period after the second lactation period was 101,3 days, ranging from 26 to 268 days. The average service period after the third lactation period was 112 days, ranging from 18 to 239 days. The average service period after the forth lactation period was 87,8. The average service period in the five lactation periods of 455 head was 95,29 days, ranging from 15 to 262 days. According to the findings of research we can conclude that the average service period is approaching the optimum with a tendency to decrease slightly along with the age of cows.
