We study two functions $xi_{k}(s)$ and $xi_{k_1,dots,k_r}(s)$ introducedby extsc{Arakawa} and extsc{Kaneko} [Nagoya Math. J., extbf{153} (1999), 189--209] andrelate them with (finite) multiple zeta values and multiple zeta star values using elementarymethods. In particular, we give an alternative proof of a result of Ohno [extsc{Y. Ohno:} J. Number Theory, extbf{74} (1999), 39--43]
