One of the many activities Brian was fond of quoting was the LETTER Project. He referred to it several times in his publications and it was this which caused him to write his book (with Alan Rogers) Adult Literacy and Development: stories from the field (2012). I am therefore glad of an opportunity to record something of this programme for him in this Special Memorial Issue.
