The purpose of the essay is to discuss the peculiarities of Machado de Assis' own way of writing up the short story as confronted with the issues formerly enunciated by Edgar A. Poe in his so-called "theory of the prose tale". In this respect, analogies and marks of differentiation with the Impressionism and its assumptions are searched out with the final aim of stating the very originality of Machado de Assis' mode of narration. The ideas from Ricardo Piglia's "Teses Sobre o Conto" are also indicated so that the mood of duplicity and ambiguity which is spread throughout Machado de Assis' short stories could succesfully be argued.
