Over a hundred years ago, Sir William Osler wrote the immortal words: “Do the Kind thing and do it First”. In these few words, he evokes everything from the simplest aspects of caring, to the complex nuances of the patient– doctor relationship. Was he referring to wellness of spirit and being, the treatment of pain and suffering; or the delivery of compassionate care through with an understanding smile or a kind gesture?
