In this article, the functions of discourse markers are considered. Despite numerous investigations concerning this issue in linguistics, there is no agreement on a discourse marker definition, neither there is a common approach to terminology describing the phenomenon, nor unified criteria for their classification. Therefore, we analyze the existing approaches regarding this phenomenon and generalize on them viewing discourse markers as objects of linguistics with great functional potential. In the experiment, specific features of the discourse markers ну and well are revealed in contexts that actualize their functions, their frequency is also demonstrated. Several functions of these discourse markers are singled out and illustrated by numerous examples.
