The paper focuses on the findings obtained in the course of the trips to the Middle East by people from various social layers of Russia. Whether the core purpose of the trip was pilgrimage, business or science — they all engaged in an in-depth and diverse study of the visited areas: history, geography, demography, etc. The trips were often initiated and assisted by the Russian diplomatic mission, which needed urgent up-to-date information about the region in the conditions of the underdeveloped consulate network.
