The research focuses on M.F. Gnesin’s diverse creative legacy: scholarly and critical texts (mainly unpublished manuscripts) studied by music experts sporadically, as well as pieces of music (including not previously studied ideas). The paper dwells upon Gnesin's theses on the origin of music, its essence and properties, its position in the arts system — in the theoretical works; the author's concept of arts synthesis (in particular, music and painting); M.F. Gnesin’s views on cultural identity, thoughts on further development of the Russian music after 1918, on the creative tasks of the Jewish professional composer school; in musical compositions — styles used by Mikhail Fabianovich as a composer (form, melody, harmony, rhythm). The purpose of the project is to obtain all-embracing insights into M.F. Gnesin’s overall multifaceted activity, to describe his aesthetic views, to highlight the core areas of academic and critical legacy, to study the stylistic features of his music and to view them in the context of his artistic vision.
