Forest activity in the economic development of Chignahuapan, PueblaAbstract: measuring the contribution of an economic activity allows to know its importance in the economic development of a municipality to design and implement policies that promote their development and social welfare. This study analyzes the economic contribution of forestry activity in Chignahuapan, Puebla using the input-output matrix with Flegg’s method. The input-output matrix was generated at the municipal level based on national matrix 2008; 21 economic sectors including forestry and timber were disaggregated. The results suggest that to meet final demand to an increase of $1.00, the forestry sector would have to increase $1.61, while the rest of the sectors related to the forestry sector will have to increase to $1.10 to meet the timber industry’s needs. The forestry and timber industry promote the municipal development; so this case could be regarded as a model for other municipalities or similar regions.Key words: forest development; input-output matrix; forest industry; municipalities; timber industry; Chignahuapan; economic development.
