El gran desafío para la agricultura en los próximos 20 años, será el de producir suficiente alimento para la población creciente de los países en desarrollo. En principio hay dos posibles rutas hacia la producción de alimentos a niveles que puedan satisfacer la demanda: La expansión de tierras agrícolas y/o la intensificación agrícola.
