The heterogeneity of aqueous solutions of polythimidylic acid (poly-T) at room temperature has been established by the methods of luminescence and absorption spectroscopy. Two fractions of thymine chromophores have been identified: 1) a photoactive fraction consisting of two types of stacking aggregates with an optimal structure for photodimerization, the first type corresponds to absorption bands at 250 and 280 nm (exciton splitting 4300 cm-1), the second - 260 and 290 nm (exciton splitting 4000 cm-1); 2) photochemically intact with the maximum of absorption spectrum at 270 nm, without exciton splitting, probably consisting of relatively isolated chromophores.
