Optical characteristics of nitrate and nitrite salts and their water solutions are investigated with the goal to demonstrate the applicability of direct spectrophotometric methods to detect various forms of nitrogen salts in water. We provide examples of the application of the method to measure nitrogen ion in samples of natural and potable water from wells.
