An axisymmetric high-velocity impact of metal targets with porous rode projectiles was experimentally and numerically studied. The study demonstrates a significant effect of the porosity of a projectile on the penetration process. The penetration depth of porous rode projectiles increases at ultrahigh impact velocities compared to monolithic projectiles with equal masses and diameters. This effect is associated with the accelerated formation of localized shear bands followed by fragmentation of the material. One of the possible approaches to evaluate the penetration depth can be the proposed approximate (engineering) method that considers the dynamic strength characteristics of interacting bodies. The calculations performed by the proposed method are in good qualitative and quantitative agreement with experimental data.
