The paper presents an analysis of the publications based on the results of experimental, clinical and epidemiological studies on the role of selenium in the normal functioning of the thyroid gland, efficacy of selenium in autoimmune thyreopatologii and modern understanding of its mechanisms. The results of research of level the selenium level in the hair of adolescents aged 14 — residents of some settlements Balakleysky and Chuguevsky areas of the Kharkiv region, was investigated. It was indicated the presence of selenium deficiency in these areas and the severity of which was the largest in the Chervonyy Donets village. When thyroid sonography revealed its increasing its volume in 64.3 % of cases.
