A  methodology is outlined to measure histological poplar treering variables  like vessel area, being sensitive ecological indicators.     Thin section preparation methods and a staining schedule are suggested to  enhance contrast and to obtain best intensity colour for subsequent analyses  of poplar treering variables, using a computeraided image analysis technique.
