Electroplating and calcium carbonate sludges as binding material for sludge solidification

Resource recycling and wastes treating wastes are the basic concepts of this study which uses a heat‐treated mixture of an electroplating sludge and a calcium carbonate sludge as a binder for sludge solidification. The heat‐treated mixture was prepared by mixing the above two industrial wastes at 1 000°C for 4 hours. It was then used to partially replace (10, 20, and 40 wt% replacement) Portland cement for solidification of the original, hazardous electroplating sludge. The heat‐treated waste mixture was found to have an excellent binding capability. Moreover, the monoliths solidified by this binder system have exhibited outstanding physicochemical properties, including unconfined compressive strength, TCLP leaching toxicity, acid neutralization capacity, resistance to repetitive leaching by a synthetic acid rain, resistance to freezing‐thawing cycling, and resistance to wetting‐drying cycling.
