The occurrence of biological oxygen transfer enhancement was investigated with samples of influent wastewater and wastewater solids collected from a nearby wastewater treatment plant. The potential mechanisms for the enhancement, namely, cell respiration, physical presence of solids, and wastewater modification, were studied in isolation by careful experimental design. The physical presence of nonrespiring solids was found to retard oxygen transfer, presumably because of the lower oxygen permeability in the solids layer accumulated near the bubble surfaces. On the other hand, cell respiration and wastewater modification enhanced the oxygen transfer rates. Overall oxygen transfer enhancements of approximately 20% were observed.
