Activities in environmental law in 2008 were heaviest in the areas of enforcement, water quality, and emerging issues. EPA and other agencies produced several new documents dealing with global climate change and sustainability issues. EPA's compliance office claimed responsibility for nearly $12 billion in environmental improvements that resulted from enforcement actions. At the end of the year, activity centered around changes due to the new administration expected to take office in January 2008.
