This research investigates both the ancient tradition and the medieval tradition of a definition of philosophy – Art of the arts and Science of the sciences, and how they evolved over time. Ramon Llull’s new Art of Arts was developed from the «Art of Contemplation in God» (Liber contemplationis), which is the first encyclopedic Art of Llull. This first General Art of Llull contains many specific approaches through which Llull applies his first Art, both to the liberal arts and to the mechanical ones. Therefore, Llull sensually and intellectually contemplates any and every rung of the ladder of creatures. The first General Art of Llull is well suited to the invention of all the specific arts. It reshapes the definition of the Art of Arts and makes it really general.
